One of the questions we hear most often is:

"I've never snorkeled before. Will I be able to do it?"

For most people, the answer is yes.

Many reefs are located in shallow, protected waters, so you don't need to be an experienced swimmer to enjoy them. The Caribbean stays warm throughout the year, making it comfortable to spend plenty of time in the water without getting cold.

One of our favorite moments is watching guests return to the boat after their first snorkeling session. Families often come back laughing, children can't wait to talk about everything they discovered beneath the surface, and many guests spend the evening replaying the videos they captured with their GoPro. Those shared moments often become some of the highlights of the entire trip.

Every day underwater is different. Some mornings you'll spend your entire snorkel surrounded by schools of colorful tropical fish. Other days you may find a nurse shark resting quietly on the sandy bottom beside the reef. Despite their name, nurse sharks are harmless to humans and are usually far more interested in resting than swimming away.

One of our favorite encounters is the spotted eagle ray. Watching one glide effortlessly through the water, moving its broad fins like wings, is something you'll never forget. Encounters like these can never be guaranteed, but that's exactly what makes every snorkeling experience unique.

Whether it's your first time snorkeling or you've done it many times before, a few simple habits can make the experience even more enjoyable—for you and for the reefs.

1/ Listen to your captain's briefing. Every snorkeling spot is different. Before entering the water, your captain will explain the conditions, where to swim, and anything you should be aware of.

2/ Move slowly. You don't need to swim fast to enjoy marine life. In fact, moving calmly often allows fish and other sea creatures to come much closer.

3/ Never touch or stand on the coral. Coral reefs are living ecosystems that take decades to grow. Even accidental contact can damage them.

4/ Keep a respectful distance from wildlife. Tropical fish, rays, sea stars, and nurse sharks are best enjoyed by observing them naturally without chasing or touching them.

5/ Wear a rash guard or reef-safe sunscreen. The tropical sun is strong, and protecting your skin means you'll enjoy the water for longer throughout your trip.

6/ Bring an underwater camera if you have one. Many guests tell us that watching their underwater photos and videos together after dinner becomes one of their favorite memories from the trip.
