The name San Blas was introduced during the Spanish colonial period. It appeared in maps and navigation routes created by outsiders, not by the people who lived in the territory.

It explains why “San Blas Panama” became the name used internationally, even though it does not reflect the identity of the region itself.

Guna Yala means “land of the Guna.”

The Guna people speak Dulegaya, which can be understood as “language of the people.” In this context, dule means person, and gaya refers to language or way of speaking.

Unlike San Blas, this name comes from within the territory.

It has always been used by the Guna people, long before the region appeared on colonial maps.

Around 2023, Guna authorities formally reinforced the use of the spelling “Guna” instead of “Kuna,” and reaffirmed Guna Yala Panama as the official name of their autonomous Indigenous region.

This was not a rebranding. It was a reaffirmation of identity and control.

There is no physical difference between San Blas and Guna Yala. It is the same territory in Panama.

The difference is in the origin and meaning of the name.
