San Blas (Guna Yala):Sailing Beyond the Conventional Caribbean
Sailing in San Blas, officially known as Guna Yala, offers a fundamentally different Caribbean experience. This autonomous indigenous territory on Panama’s Caribbean coast is governed by the Guna people and operates under its own rules regarding land use and tourism. Large-scale development is intentionally absent: there are no resorts, no cruise terminals, and no mass tourism infrastructure.
Exploring the archipelago by sailing catamaran or sailboats (veleros) is not about curated luxury. It is about access, rhythm, and navigation. Boats are the natural way to move between the more than 300 islands that make up the region, many of them uninhabited.
All boats offered through Go San Blas are equipped with Starlink satellite internet. Connectivity is available, although guests are encouraged to disconnect and experience the slower pace that defines sailing in Guna Yala.
What sets San Blas apart is its authentic, off-the-grid experience—no big resorts, no mass tourism, just eco-friendly sailing adventures and deep cultural immersion. You’ll enjoy fresh seafood, explore unspoiled nature, and experience the Guna way of life. It’s a must-visit for anyone seeking true serenity, adventure, and a taste of a disappearing way of island living.

Autonomous indigenous territory with limited development:
- Sailing as the primary form of transportation
- Short navigations protected by reef systems
- Flexible routing based on weather and sea conditions
- No resorts, no staged experiences, no fixed programs
- San Blas is defined by variability, not standardization.
Sailing in Guna Yala
Navigation in San Blas consists mainly of short sails between islands. Routes and anchorages are planned according to wind, sea state, and local conditions rather than rigid schedules.
Life onboard follows a functional and relaxed rhythm:
- Sailing
- Anchoring
- Swimming
- Meals
- Rest
- Boat layouts, onboard services, and crew setups vary, reflecting the reality of operating in a remote sailing region.
Connectivity and Disconnection
All vessels include Starlink satellite internet, allowing guests to stay connected if needed. At the same time, sailing in San Blas naturally encourages a temporary digital pause—inviting guests to reconnect with navigation, surroundings, and daily life onboard.
Charter Options in San Blas
Private Charters
Private charters offer exclusive use of the vessel for your group. This format allows greater flexibility in daily decisions such as sailing distances, anchoring locations, meal timing, and overall onboard rhythm. It is best suited for couples, families, or groups prioritizing privacy and adaptability.
Shared Charters
Shared charters involve booking a cabin on a boat shared with other guests. The itinerary is generally predefined, and flexibility is more limited. This option reduces costs and introduces a social dynamic, as meals and common areas are shared.
Both options operate in the same sailing areas and provide access to the same islands. The difference lies in expectations, not experience quality.
Compare Private and Shared ChartersActivities
Activities are simple and weather-dependent.
Typical days may include:
- Swimming and snorkeling over shallow reefs
- Kayaking or paddle boarding near the islands
- Time spent ashore
- Fishing may be possible while sailing, depending on conditions and equipment.
Wildlife encounters, including dolphins, can occur, but they are never guaranteed and should be considered a matter of chance rather than an expectation.
There are no scheduled excursions. Each day unfolds according to conditions and onboard decisions.
