Sailing in Guna Yala, Panama, illustrating year-round weather conditions and hurricane-free Caribbean sailing

Panama sailing weather guide

Is there really a place in the Caribbean where you don’t have to think about hurricane season?

From how we see it, living aboard year-round, Panama is one of the few places where that question simply disappears.

Panama sits outside the hurricane belt

Panama’s position, close to the equator, keeps it south of the usual paths of Atlantic hurricanes.

San Blas, inside the Guna Yala territory, benefits directly from this. While other Caribbean destinations plan around storm seasons, here the calendar stays open.

After more than ten years sailing and anchoring in these islands, we’ve never had to move a boat because of a hurricane. It’s just not part of life here.

San Blas weather stays consistent all year

The climate doesn’t shift dramatically between months. Air and water temperatures stay between 26–30°C (78–86°F), with small variations.

From our perspective on the boat, this consistency shapes everything. You swim every day, you sleep with the same breeze, and you don’t adjust your plans around extreme changes.

Dry season brings wind and higher demand

From December to April, trade winds are more stable and present. Sailing conditions are more active, with steady breeze and clearer skies.

It’s also the busiest period. More boats arrive, anchorages fill up faster, and routes between islands see more movement.

We usually suggest this season if you enjoy sailing itself as part of the experience, not just being at anchor.

Green season brings calmer days and changing skies

From May to November, the rhythm shifts.

Rain tends to come in short, passing showers, often at night. Days remain open, warm, and easy to navigate.

What we notice most is the sky. After years living here, we’ve seen that this season brings deeper colors, more defined cloud layers, and sunsets that change every day.

Some mornings are completely clear. Other days, clouds sit low on the horizon and soften the light. It feels different, but not worse—just another version of the same place.

San Blas works without a fixed sailing season

Many Caribbean destinations depend on specific months. San Blas doesn’t.

No hurricanes means no forced closures, no strict timing, and no need to avoid half the year.

From our point of view, living aboard, the difference is simple: the place is always accessible. It just changes its mood depending on the month.
